Permit Information

California May Issue to Residents only.

Permits Issued By
County Sheriff or Police Chief of the area you reside.Contact your county sheriff's office or, if you are a resident of an incorporated city, your city police department, for information on obtaining a CCW license. They can answer your questions and provide you with a copy of their CCW license policy statement and the CCW license application. If you live within an incorporated city, you may apply to the police department or the county sheriff's office for a CCW license. However, only residents of a city may apply to a city police department for a CCW license.

Permit Requirements
California law allows Police Chiefs and County Sheriffs to issue a license to carry a concealed firearm if the following requirements are met:

1. Upon proof that the person applying is of good moral character
2. That good cause exists for the issuance
3. The applicant is a resident of the county or city to which they are applying (or the applicant’s place of employment is within the city or      county)
4. The applicant has completed a course of training (16-24 hours)

May I carry a concealed firearm in California?
Generally you may not carry a concealed firearm on your person in public unless you have a valid Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) license. CCW licenses are issued only by a California county sheriff to residents of the county, or the chief of police to residents of the city. California law does not honor or recognize CCW licenses issued outside this state.

Informing Law Enforcement of Carry:
Some counties (Orange County in particular) require that during any contact with law enforcement, you must “immediately announce” you are carrying a concealed weapon and have a license to do so. Other counties do not have the same mandatory disclosure requirement. If you’re in one of those counties, you have to make the decision whether or not to notify the officer. Law enforcement officers that frequent this forum overwhelmingly would want to be notified. Wouldn’t you if you were them?\

Permit Renewal
CCW Permit Renewals (every 2 years): Prior to renewal, complete a 4-hour legal firearms update refresher course. Qualify with each firearm you want listed on your CCW Permit. Range Qualifications: You must qualify biennially (every two years) or upon renewal of your permit with the firearms listed on your permit.
